"Our people are good people; our people are kind people. Pray God some day kind people won't all be poor. Pray God some day a kid can eat.
And the associations of owners knew that some day the praying would stop. And there's the end."
-- John Steinbeck, The Grapes of Wrath

Scouting Reports
Revisions, rebuttals, or embellishments?
Let's hear it.
| Keith
Ashdown |
He
runs faster and jumps higher than you'd expect, but this
may be simply because he never gives up on a frisbee.
A fierce competitor, he is arguably the best defensive
player in the league. He has a good forehand, and highly
accurate long hammer. He likes to make the first throw
after a stop. |
| Jill
Cashen |
| A quick, sharp passer who dumps the
Frisbee almost as soon as she gets it. Plays in the middle
lane, and uses position to win passes. The original matriarch
of the league, she provides critical sideline support
with her new baby Audrey. |
| Charlie
Cray |
Old
and crafty, he arrives late and plays hard. A little faster
than Hennelly, he uses smarts to get open. Will go long,
but works the sideline well. Keeps his passes short, accurate,
and catchable, making him the guy to give the Frisbee
to near the box. |
| Dave
Derosa |
| The theory is that he
is a reincarnated French soldier, because no one in the
world backs up faster than Derosa. A pinpoint passer,
he has a great backhand, forehand, hammer, and everything
else. Be ready, because his passes come in hard and usually
right at your head. Strong with quick hands and feet,
he is probably the league's best defender in the box.
When passing looks long first, then dumps. |
| Lizzie
Fetter |
A
tough player with great concentration, she's not afraid
to go after jump discs, and more often than not wins them.
With great hands, she can stretch out and make catches.
After the catch she usually releases quickly, and runs
the give and go well. |
| Brian
Gitlin |
| Very fast, he plays the
stop and go, breaking towards the passer on the sideline.
If that's not there, he turns up towards the box. Can
cover a lot of ground on defense to stop the long ball,
and is fearless going up for jump discs. A great defender,
he can shut down much bigger players with his athleticism.
|
| Iain
Gold |
With
a slashing, dramatic style, Iain loves to play bigger
players and beat them with better mobility and concentration.
When going after jump frisbees he never misjudges or mistimes
his jump, and he usually beats taller players. Never gives
up on a throw, and lays out to make catches. Will stay
after a frisbee after it has been tipped, so on defense
you must grab the disk to safely stop him. Loves throwing
and going deep. |
| John
Hennelly |
Hammer
time. Slow and short, Hennelly plays a thinking man's
game. Has an OK forehand, but prefers the hammer, which
he goes to more than anyone in the league. Bad ankles
force him to play conservative on defense, but slow as
he is, he never stops moving. Allowed to play because
he owns the cones. |
| Brad
Karrer |
 Tall
and fast, Brad plays with complete abandon. He seems to
enjoy getting and being injured, and lays out for every
throw, even if it is nowhere near him. He can guard anyone
on the field, and is a spectacular playmaker. Though he
is not expected to last long, his plays and subsequent
injuries have been a source of pain and mirth for everyone.
(Check out Brad's
tattoo.) |
| Nancy
Marshall |
| The best set of lungs
on the field, she never stops moving, and turns on the
speed when coming open. She likes to break towards the
passer and then turn up field, and will run the give and
go on the sideline if you let her. On defense she plays
tight coverage, denying passing lanes. Your only hope
is to stay behind her, hope for a bad pass, and try to
wear her down by switching defenders. |
| Jim
McNeill |
His
size, vertical leap, and orange hat make him a favorite
target in the box. He prefers the "chunk it long" style
of attack on offense, and has a decent forehand. His favorite
position is prone on the sideline. |
| Isabelle
Moses |
Like
Lane, Isabelle likes to play with
her back to the frisbee, sprinting for the end zone. Best
to throw her a long one on the wing, and she will run
it down. On defense she uses her quickness to step into
passing lanes and knock the frisbee down. Very athletic,
she catches more rebound passes than anyone, and has a
level, straight backhand that goes where she wants it.
We lost Isabelle to soccer for a while, but she's brought
her unbelievable speed and sticky hands back to the game.

| Tris
Newbury |
| Likes to play the short
game in the middle of the field, where she is fearless
going for the disc. Plays with her feet, moving constantly
to get open. She likes to circle around the box, and then
come toward the passer quickly for an easy score. Smart,
with a solid backhand. |
| Linda
Odell |
A
tough player with a hard forehand, Linda prefers to work
the sideline and dump in passes. She knows how to turn
it up field when the passing lanes are clogged, and can
run down long throws. She throws only when she is satisfied
someone is open, and will go deep with her forehand. |
| Manny
Pastreich |
| The total package, he
is so good "Manny Rules" had to be promulgated to stop
the insanity. Lightning quick, he likes to hide on defense,
and then close with stunning speed to knock the pass down.
On offense he likes to stop and go, running across the
grain to shed defenders. He has the highest vertical leap
in the game. Your only hope is to stay near him and them
cover him close after he makes a catch. Put Plevan on
him, and stand back. |
| Dave
Plevan |
| Plevan has great reach
and catches everything thrown in his direction. He combines
deceptive quickness and a great vertical leap with a strong
desire to win the Frisbee. His game seems to improve every
week. Can play jump ball with taller players and win with
postion and better height. A good forehand, he likes to
throw low and hard to avoid picks. |
| Kris
Raab |
Her
size (over six feet, with long arms) and grace make her
tough to defend, but it turns out she is a great defensive
player, blocking shots in the box with the efficiency
of a machine (a union-run machine). She played college
Ultimate, and is a leader on the field. Very good give
and go player. She is as pinko as you can get without
invoking a military tribunal. |
| Lori
Scott |
Tall,
she catches everything thrown above her head. Brand new
to the sport a year ago, she has developed a good short
game in the middle of the field. On defense she is a run
stopper, often flattening passes with a vengeance (she
has lost one thumbnail already whacking Frisbees). Plays
smart coverage, and will get open in the box if you don't
watch her. |
| Jeff
Stein |
Young,
cheerful, and full of confidence, Jeff usually arrives
late and then goes long. Good speed, he likes the transition
game, breaking towards the box immediately after turnovers.
On defense he likes to play for the block, and talks a
lot of trash. |
| Neil
Tangri |
| When it's working, Neil
has as good a forehand as anybody. He likes to throw low
and angle it up, to prevent interception. As a receiver
he has a great low game, and will slide to make shoestring
grabs. In the box he will circle in and out and try to
pop open in front of the passer. Likes to cut back and
forth across the field on medium routes, and stays close
to you on defense. |
| Nick
Weiner |
Nick
played college basketball, and he has great size and athleticism.
He understands where to be on the field. Likes the long
game, but has the smarts to play short. The only way to
defend him is to stay in the passing lane and hope the
hammer throw never comes, or to get his young
son to start crying on the sideline. |
| Lane
Windham |
| Lane has the best low
game in the league. She prefers to play in the middle
of the field, with her back to the frisbee as she dashes
unnoticed into the box. If you give her a step, watch
out, because she will lay out and make the catch. A deceptively
quick player who makes great cuts and always seems to
be open. She plays tight one-on-one defense. |
